About John Rickel

JOHN MARSCHNER RICKEL is a licensed attorney [#P19432] and is Managing Director of The Rickel Law Firm, PC. He graduated from the Detroit Public Schools in 1957, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960 from the University of Michigan, and his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School in 1963.

Upon graduation from law school and being admitted to the Michigan State Bar, Mr. Rickel in 1964 signed an Agreement to Co-operatively Practice Law with Harry Rickel, his Grand Father, who also graduated from the University of Michigan Law School, was admitted to the Michigan Bar in 1899, and who as a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve marched behind John Philip Sousa at the World Fair in Paris, France in 1900.

John M. Rickel was also an Instructor at Wayne State University Law School for three years, as well as active in and Counsel to his family’s multi-state business, H.W.Rickel & Company, of which he became Treasurer in 1969. He also attended the University of Michigan Graduate School of Business Administration, and joined Touche Ross & Co. (now Deloitte, C.P.A.s) in 1969, becoming a Certified Public Accountant [#7195] admitted to practice in 1972. He served on both the audit and tax staffs of that firm, along with consulting assignments, until 1975, when he joined the Butzel, Long, Gust, Klein & Van Zile law firm in private practice. Mr. Rickel was a founder of Rickel & Baun, P.C. in 1977, as well as John M. Rickel, C.P.A., P.C. Mr. Rickel specialized in real estate, tax, S.E.C., corporate, and contract law, including estate planning, probate, and wills and trusts, as well as handling family, insurance and agency law problems. He worked in planning, structuring, negotiating, and litigating business and personal financial transactions, and he dealt with both publicly and privately held corporations. His diversified corporate and individual clientele has taken him into significant involvement in corporate, probate, divorce, commercial, collection, real estate and tax law litigation. He is Founder, past President/Treasurer and past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Grosse Pointe Cable Television system.

Mr. Rickel is a past 6 year term limited member of the Board of Directors of the State of Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA), and remains a 20 year member of the MICPA Ethics Committee, charged with addressing and resolving CPA alleged ethics violations. Mr. Rickel periodically teaches tax, accounting, auditing, ethics and bankruptcy seminars for the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants in its Continuing Professional Education Program, and periodically writes new courses for that Program.

Mr. Rickel served for 2 years as a Special Investigator for the Attorney Grievance Commission of the State Bar of Michigan. He is a member of the State Bars of Michigan, Hawaii,  llinois and Missouri, and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) [#7694].

Mr. Rickel is a Past President of the Investment Analysts Society of Detroit [now CFA Society of Detroit], the Michigan affiliate of the Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA) Institute [formerly Association for Investment Management and Research (AIMR)].

Mr. Rickel was the elected term-limited worldwide Chairman of the then 134 Presidents of the CFA Institute local Societies from 2001 to 2004, following terms as Chair of the US CFA Presidents, and Midwest CFA Presidents. There were then about 167,000 CFA Charterholders, Candidates taking the 3 year series of examinations, and Candidates who had not yet begun the examinations, in those 134 worldwide Societies. CFAs are generally the professional investors employed at investment banks, insurance companies, pension funds, and banks.

Mr. Rickel is a member of the Board of Directors and / or an Officer of a number of Michigan and other State corporation and LLCs. He is also United States General Counsel to Association Dues Assurance Corporation (“ADAC’), a licensed, bonded Michigan secured real estate Lien collection agency, and to ONYX, LLC. ONYX has written the leading edge proprietary Information Technology software and technology application for litigation of secured real property Liens filed over the internet with Registers of Deeds / Bureaus of Conveyances, in support of The Rickel Law Firm, which has relationships / operations in 26 State jurisdictions in the United States, and is licensed in District of Columbia, Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri and Hawaii, ONYX / ADAC is the sole Corporate Business Member providing asset recovery litigation, serving Community Associations Institute (“CAI”). CAI is the non-profit entity representing many of the 330,000 Community Associations (condominiums, HOAs, co-ops) in the United States, Mexico, Canada and Dubai, and their accredited Property Managers.

Mr. Rickel is admitted to legal practice in District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, and Virginia State Courts, certain U.S. District Courts, U.S. Court of Appeals – Sixth Circuit, U.S. Tax Court, and the United States Supreme Court. He is a life member of the Economic Club of Detroit, and is a past President, past Treasurer and past Board Member of the Grosse Pointe War Memorial Association, Grosse Pointe’s community center, a past Board Member of the Grosse Pointe Historical Society and of the Circumnavigator’s Club, past Treasurer, Board member, and President of the Detroit Presidents’ Organization, Inc. (now the Detroit YPO Gold alumni organization), and a past Board Member and past Corporate Secretary of the University Club of Detroit. Mr. Rickel was Chairman of the Economic Futuring Task Force for the Grosse Pointes Cities Futuring Project. He is also an FAA licensed instrument pilot, and was skipper of Athena, a 35′ racing sloop which finished 2″ for the season two years in a row in the Detroit River Yachting Association (DRYA) in Cruising C /D.

Mr. Rickel attended the YPO Executive Management Seminar at the Stanford University Graduate Business School, and the YPO Advanced Management Seminar at the Harvard University Business School.
